Why you must learn a new language?

learning new language and brain areas

We are having more screen time than ever before. Especially, during pandemic, we have started learning online and on the go.  Our language skills may be dying away and our brain functions of learning new things and language skills may die away too. The solution to the problem is to engage our brain to learn a new language or a skill.

Let’s see how acquiring knowledge of a new language changes our brain.

Your brain is one of the most active organs of your body. Refer to the picture below. The brain nerve fiber sent out sounds that we learn to Broca’s area. While, Wernicke’s area help us in emotions and cognitive function related to learning a new language. Thus, Broca’s area is stimulated with phonics and phonology associated to the language and Wernicke’s area helps in comprehending the new language being learnt.

Wernicke’s area-cognition and comprehension

The language production occurs in Boca’s area while the language switch is in area of Wernicke’s.

Benefits of learning a new language

Sharpens analytical and decision making skills

Learning a language stimulates and changes our brain to be agile and become like sponge to absorb new skills. This bestows the learner with a greater ability to make better decisions. The ability to analyze and understanding the problem at hand is sharpened.

Greater cultural awareness and tolerance

Language comes with new experiences, new ways of thinking and having conversation in the other language makes you think in the way people from that culture thinks and acts. You may not be aware that the new language has gradually cultivated a greater cultural awareness in you. It gives you tolerance and understanding of diverse people you may be dealing with every day at work or in your community.

Higher IQ and EQ

Language brings changes in your overall intelligence and cognitive skills in long run. Research shows that people who are bilingual or multilingual tends to show a higher Intelligent Quotient. Moreover, their Emotional Quotient is also higher. That means the way you process, react and control your emotions is in a much controlled and mature manner. Many decisions you make have a lot to do with your emotions rather than your intelligence. Of course, combination of better IQ and EQ can help you make better decisions that are balanced and non-impulsive.

Deeper intuition and general awareness of surrounding

In your day to day life, you set up big and small goals. Some of the goals are just so natural for you than others. You may also achieve them easily because that’s deep rooted in your brain and your basic instinct channels you in that direction. Such people usually have two or more languages learnt since childhood. Their sixth sense is at higher level because of the way their brain has been modified after learning a few different languages. There are times you make decisions with your intuition and experience; having advantage of learnt a new language can enable you with a deep insight and intuition into the given situation in life.

Better sensory co-ordination and reflections

While you were learning a new language, your sensory, auditory and motor reflections were getting sharper. Over time, your brain has better neurology and nerve fibers that acts faster and better. This enables you to have a greater coordination in sports, games and other motor skills and performing arts. You may suddenly see a new hobby or sport that you start liking. That is such a great way to live a fuller life!

When we learn new skills or language, our brain is transformed to learn and adapt. That’s the reason we call it as ‘out of comfort zone’, because learning new skills or language is not that easy and you got to challenge yourself. After all you are making great changes to your brain and its electron-chemical mechanism in a positive way. Happy Learning!
