New emerging Bronfenbrenner’s ecological approach to child development during COVID19

New emerging Bronfenbrenner’s ecological approach to child development during COVID19

Teacher Education: Child Psychology

Urie Bronfenbrenner, a psychologist , had proposed that there are four major levels of environment that simultaneously influences an individual, especially children. The settings that make up child’s environment has a great impact on the development of a child.

Hand crafted Bronfenbrenner’s Theory by Mona Chowhan. Feel free to download, print and use.

Each system is embedded within the next larger system. 4 broad systems are:

  1. Microsystem (immediate everyday interactives of an individual-child)
  2. Mesosyetem (interactive layer between microsystem and exosystem)
  3. Exosystem (school, social media, TV)
  4. Macrosystem (cross cultural study)

Application to the current hybrid and blended learning Scenarios:

During the virtual and remote learning, the microsystem has changed dramatically and we witness the exosystem has infiltered into the child’s microsystem. In my opinion the change has created geniuses but the level of anxiety and mental health problem may be on rise. For instance, learning from social media, devices, tv has impacted the child. Every other child is genius because they know a lot from the smart devices and television. The child is learning more from the hand held devices than ever before. Pandemic just added conformity to this changing ecosystem of Bronfenbrenner’s theory on child development.

Now with this infiltration of exosystem into microsystem, changes everything in this theory. The mesosystem layer is constant but the two layers of interaction has gone topsy-turvy or swap their place in the theory. (refer the diagram below). In simple language, the microsystem and the exosystems has changed seats!

New emerging Bronfenbrenner’s theory during COVID19 virtual learning

Peers are no more major influence in virtual school. However, the hybrid or blended learning has given some peer, school and other influences to act upon the child.

The macrosystem includes government’s decisions and state governments’ strategies to combat the challenges during pandemic and how to continue or discontinue face to face schooling. The decisions on synchronous and asynchronous instruction is playing a significant role of swapping the layers of microsystem and exosystem. Perhaps, it completely carves a path for a new emerging Bronfenbrenner’s theory during the virtual learning.
