International Chess Day

Throughout history, sports have proven to motivate/inspire people, break down racial and political barriers, and promote a healthier lifestyle. Not many people think of chess in relation to sports. However, chess is a challenging game that encompasses all of the above as well as psychology, tactics, and mental stamina. Chess is a two-player strategy board game that is popular worldwide, so much so that it has its own day. International Chess Day is celebrated annually on July 20th, which is the date FIDE (International Chess Federation) was founded. It has been celebrated since 1966 after the idea was proposed by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

In a game of chess two players aim to move their different playing pieces around a checkered board while ultimately trying to capture the opponents “king” piece. It is believed to have derived from an Indian game by the name of chaturanga during the Gupta period. The game spread along the Silk Roads west of Persia and made it to Europe by the 9th century. At that time, chess failed to be as inclusive as it is today. After all, chess is called the royal game because every king, queen, and emperor played it. King Charles I even carried his board to the grave! Literally, he carried his chess board to his execution. This shared devotion to this game is still felt today.

We all are able to recognize the iconic checkered board and playing pieces, but chess didn’t always look this way. By the end of the 15th century, chess had changed countless times and it wasn’t until the 1880’s that the game evolved into what is considered a modern chess game. In 1886 the first official World Championship was hosted. Chess was revolutionized during the 10th century thanks to technology and chess engines. In 1997 the World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov lost a six-game match to the IBM’s computer Deep Blue. Talk about impossible!

Now a day’s chess can practically be played anywhere and by all.

Another great reason to play chess is the many health benefits. Many studies have proven that chess is a great tool for aiding children with mathematical concepts and important cognitive skills. It is said to improve problem-solving skills and create an environment that increases mental stamina. Recent studies have even recommended chess to help the fight against Alzheimer’s because it improves memory function. If you like to challenge yourself definitely give chess a whirl!

Chess is now an established part of modern-day culture. This global game is a tradition that will live on forever, whether it be online or in person.  This July 20th indulge your mind with a game of chess and celebrate the beauty of chess with millions of people around the world.
