A Guide to Artistic Creation

My Experiences and Recommendations by Nat Briceno-Contributing writer

Oftentimes, students find discouragement in pursuing a creative learning path in the fine arts. This is from the generalized importance of fields in law, science, and business. Every career path that brings joy is considered a valid one in my book. What I found in myself was my calling to many forms of arts that are specific to the entertainment industry.

From the Beginning

Usually, a spark, an interest, a longing for something can be found at a young age. My journey started with stories in a beaten up green notebook. I would write about ideas. At first, I didn’t really know what the implications of my ideas were. It was always a thought in my head, “Why do I even do this?” Very philosophical for a ten year old, I know, but I continued to make a point of this question in my thoughts for years. When I took my first art class in intermediate school, it was like an “aha” moment. I finally had a piece of the answer to my question. I wanted to visualize my ideas through my own creations. It started with simple drawings, usually abstract so as to capture the essence of my thoughts. This continued for years into high school. It wasn’t sufficient. It wasn’t quite right. I tried to find expression elsewhere- in music, theatre, and conceptual painting. These gloves didn’t quite fit either. When I was applying for college, I found my major, “Art and Entertainment Technologies” at UT Austin. This was the most appealing school had ever sounded to me. Pure fun for a grade? Looks like a deal to me. From there, I have grown into making assets for and designing video games, visualizing stories in short videos, harnessed my art style, plunged into lighting and projection design, and edited sounds.

Inspiration

What I think, I try to make it a reality. Thoughts come in from different conversation and everyday events, that’s what I try to incorporate in my work. Sometimes the lines of ideas are blurring but eventually it all makes sense. The majority of my works tend to be different small ideas created into a one holistic piece of art. And there’s nothing wrong with that if it happens to you. It’s my strong belief that what you think, you become. I have small ideas and goals set from those small ideas. My life is like a canvas of my small and big imaginations and creatives of my experiences. To transfer from the canvas that is my life to the canvas that is my creation. Isn’t it amazing to gather inspiration from my surroundings, feelings, and encounters and turn it into art? Anything can give way to a powerful form of artwork. It can be from a tree in your backyard to the swirls of cream in your coffee. Gathering these small things and instituting them into your work begins the formation of your own personalized artistic identity.  The best strategy on where to start with forming your own artistic identity is finding what inspires you the most of work. Something that I have tried that works extremely well is listening to a song of my choice and then proceeding to make something from start to finish. The elements of the song you’re listening to will guide the creation of the work. However, it does not have to be something like this. Looking within your own family life for ideas is also beneficial as your work will result in something more personal. Everyone finds their own place of inspiration where their creativity flows. The most basic of steps after finding your inspiration, that I recommend taking are, finding what interests you the most- what artistic path you want to take? It can be anything- and what you want your audience to receive from your work.

Where to start

It’s common to be disillusioned by the idea of not being a traditional artist. I find it pretty often in outside commentary that people think that all art is only traditional art- which includes things like paintings, sketches, and sculptures. On my path, I started as a traditional artist, but I have had first hand experiences with starting fresh in the online world and also watching others engage with digital art with no previous experience. So I disagree with the disillusionment associated with art online. Anyone can learn with the resources available for it. It took me a while to get there and others have probably taken different pathways, but I have still managed to be somewhat successful means that anyone else can be too. A fact that definitely pushed me when I was starting out was that no one is born with this knowledge and talent. It grows through experience, work, and dedication. I was discouraged with the work I was doing then and also felt some imposter’s syndrome when looking into these industries. And sometimes, I still do feel this. It’s a matter of learning to value yourself, your skill sets, your capabilities, and even your weaknesses. The best place to start is where you want to eventually be.

Now and Future Career

At this current time, most of the United States is still under quarantine with regulations on where people can be. I have been at home practicing the use of applications I own and creating new artwork as well as experimenting with things I haven’t really used before. I’ve been exercising my skills with my own work and I encourage that others do the same if they’re able to. However, the time for creating will appear before the creators when it is right and inspiration has set in. You don’t necessarily have to start because there’s free time in a period of crisis like I have. It’s just something that I have taken advantage of to hone my skills for what’s to come. Now that I’m on the topic of the future, what I aspire to be is something that’ll satisfy me and make me happy. I have so many interests and I have worked on so many things. I hope that I can always work with technology and make art for the enjoyment of others (and myself). Being the writer, creator, and designer I have always been sounds like the perfect future to me.
