The Assumption of Mary
According to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Churches, and others, the Assumption of Mary is the ascending of Mary’s, the mother of Jesus Christ, body into heaven at the end of her life on Earth. The set date for this observance is August 15 and the day is one of a major feast. It is a common practice to attend a service or mass on this day to pay respects for the occasion. In other countries around the world, this can also be referred to as The Holy Day of Obligation.
History
This day focuses on Mary’s passing and ascendance into heaven. The original appearance of this evolved concept was in the third and fourth centuries within the works, Liber Requiei Mariae (“Book of Mary’s Repose”), and the Six Books Dormition Apocryphon. These are traced back to circles with Gnostic views and a group called the Kollyridians (this group was very devoted to the teachings of the life of Mary). This event continued to be transcribed in different writings as time passed with it even reaching an assumed general belief in the eighth century that Mary passed away in the presence of apostles and upon opening her tomb, her body was no longer there. The world of Christianity began celebrating this event around the fifth century unofficially. By the eighth century, it was official. In the bible (specifically in the Old Testament), there is mention of Mary’s assumption in the book of Genesis as well as further support later in Corinthians 15:54. This support from the bible provided for the easy institution of this event into the teachings of Christianity.
Catholic Teachings
Within Catholic thought, there is some questioning of whether Mary actually passed on before her assumption. There is actually theological debate over this. It is believed that Mary was given this assumption as a gift for being the divine Mother of Christ. Whether or not her earthly departure involved death is often open to interpretation. The Catholic Church is loosely divided upon this issue. There has not been a single pope to outwardly apply a claim to either side of this debate. So the question remains, did she die or did she ascend to Heaven alive when her life was deemed over? Another point of view quite frequently found in the Eastern Catholic Church is referencing this event as the Dormition of Mary. The difference is that they believe that Mary fell asleep (passed away) and her soul rose into heaven without any type of bodily rise or assumption.
Protestant Teachings
The Anglican Church has long since denounced the possibility of this event being real and hasn’t celebrated or put faith into it. It was rejected with the Anglican Doctrine. There are loose links between these churches and any celebration remotely related to Mary’s assumption. In recent years, common ground has been reached between the Anglican and Roman Catholic Church about the significance the day marks and the way it matches up with written biblical scripture.
To summarize, most modern Protestants do not teach or believe in the Assumption of Mary. The claim behind that belief is that there is no official biblical scripture for this day. On the contrary, Lutheran Churches celebrate this day with a lesser important event on the same day as Mary, Mother of our Lord, but still do not teach or preach about the Assumption of Mary.
